An orthodontist is a doctor who has additional training in specialized dentistry. They specialize in straightening teeth and are experts in helping you choose a teeth straightening option. Keep in mind that regular dentists can prescribe Invisalign, but it is good to work with an orthodontist to make sure that you’ve looked at all of your teeth straightening options. Only a certified orthodontist can be a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, so you may double check with them to make sure that your doctor is board certified.
There is no age limit to see an orthodontist - great smiles are timeless! We usually do not see patients under the age of seven.
Crooked teeth are harder to maintain and can cause your bite to wear on the tooth surfaces. In extreme cases, this can cause problems with speech, chewing, and damage the gums and jaw bone. Early treatment is key in alleviating additional problems down the road.
It is most important to make sure that you find someone who is a good fit for you and your family. Make sure you are comfortable talking and communicating with your dental team. It’s helpful to have a dentist that is nearby and convenient to get to. Make sure the dentist is a member of the ADA (American Dental Association). Make sure the office is clean and professional. Our family dental office looks forward to meeting your expectations.
First of all, you are not alone! Many people have a fear about visiting the dentist. Please communicate with us and we can ease your fears. There are many options, including different pain relieving techniques to help during your treatments.
The length completely depends on the patient and what their specific needs are. Treatment with braces can take anywhere from 2-30 months.
Braces with Metal Brackets: Traditional braces with metal brackets are the most common kind of braces. They are made with stainless steel. The patient has a choice for which color the orthodontist uses for rubber bands. Modern metal braces are smaller than they were traditionally, so they are easier to maintain, more comfortable, and less noticeable.
Length: 1-3 years (average length is 2 years)
Pros: Lowest price point. Personalization with colored rubber bands.
Cons: Most obvious type of braces.
Braces with Ceramic/Porcelain Brackets: With ceramic braces, you have the traditional metal wires, but the brackets are ceramic. This makes the actual bracket blend into the tooth. In some cases, tooth colored wires can be used as well.
Length: 1-3 years (average length is 2 years)
Pros: Not as obvious as the metal braces. Work quicker than removable brackets.
Cons: Cost more than metal braces. Harder to maintain, as they stain easier and require extra care.
Lingual Braces: Lingual braces are metal braces, but they are applied to the inside of the teeth. These are much less common.
Length: 1-3 years (average length is 2 years)
Pros: They aren’t visible.
Cons: More expensive. Not as effective in certain cases. They are harder to keep clean. Take more time for maintenance.
Clear Aligners: Clear aligners are plastic, clear, and removable teeth straighteners. Invisalign is a brand of clear aligner treatment.
Length: Around 12 months.
Pros: Clear aligners aren’t visible, are removable, and fairly easy to maintain.
Cons: Expensive! Must wear them at least 22 hours a day, but have to remove them to eat.
